Om vele redenen kan de Fantic Trial 200 worden beschouwd als een historische machine. Het bracht een revolutie teweeg in het rijden op proef en zaaide de zaden van zijn heropleving.

Een statische omgeving

Proefrijden - een subtiele sport waarin vaardigheid alles is - heeft lange tijd geen significante technologische vooruitgang opgeleverd. Trialrijders waren weliswaar overgestapt van de 500cc Britse grote singles waarop de sport was gebaseerd naar de

Spaanse 350cc tweetaktmotoren (Bultaco, Ossa, Montesa) die zo'n vijftien jaar de discipline domineerden.

Het omverwerpen van de gevestigde orde

Toen gooide FanticMotor, een Italiaanse fabrikant gespecialiseerd in enduromachines, de gevestigde orde omver. Nadat hij in 1978 een 125cc-machine had uitgebracht, volgde Fantic het jaar daarop met een verveelde versie, de Fantic Trial 200, een kleine machine met de hoogst ongebruikelijke cilinderinhoud van 160cc voor die tijd. Hij woog 192 lb, was extreem compact en had een responsieve motor die de voorkeur gaf aan hoge toeren boven koppel. De Fantic 200 bracht een nieuwe visie van een levendige proefmachine die zeer hoogontwikkeld, modern en competitief was. Drie jaar later bracht Fantic de 240 Professional (211 cc) uit, die een enorm succes kende. Het vestigde de Barzago-fabriek als een instelling in proefkringen. Elke moderne trialmotor heeft iets te danken aan de iconoclastische kleine Fantic 200.
