Wat is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is het promoten van je producten of diensten via een blog, podcast, socialmediakanaal of website van een ander bedrijf. Er zijn twee partijen betrokken: de adverteerder, wiens producten worden gepromoot, en de publisher, die de advertentie plaatst.
Als je de adverteerder bent betaal je voor de promotie van je product of dienst op het kanaal van iemand anders. Je huurt bijvoorbeeld een blogger in om een blog te schrijven met daarin een link naar de productpagina op je website. Als je de publisher bent promoot je een product of dienst van een ander bedrijf via je eigen kanalen. Dan ben je bijvoorbeeld zelf een blogger die schrijft over vakantiehuisjes. In je blog plaats je een link naar de website van een vakantiepark. Het vakantiepark betaalt jou voor het aantal kliks op die link. Ook review- en vergelijkingswebsites maken op deze manier gebruik van affiliate marketing.

Checklist ‘Geld verdienen met affiliate marketing’
Wanneer je producten of diensten van andere bedrijven promoot op je eigen website, blog, podcast of socialmediakanaal, ben je een publisher. Let hierop als je als publisher geld wilt verdienen:
- Schrijf je inals ondernemer bij KVK. Sta je al ingeschreven, maar niet als publisher?Pas dan je bedrijfsactiviteiten aan. Twijfel je wanneer je je precies moet inschrijven, bijvoorbeeld omdat je nog niet genoeg bezoekers of volgers hebt om effectief te kunnen promoten? Vraag dan een KVK-adviseur om advies (0800 – 2117) of lees het artikelMoet ik mijn bedrijf inschrijven bij KVK?
- Ga je werken vanuit het buitenland? Check hoe het zit met je KVK-inschrijving, je belasting en je verzekering. Hetstappenplan digital nomadhelpt daarbij.
- Bouw bereik op met je website, oftewel: zorg dat zoveel mogelijk bezoekers of volgers op je kanalen komen. Hoe meer bezoekers of volgers je hebt, hoe interessanter je bent voor adverteerders.
- Zoek een affiliate netwerk. Een affiliate netwerk is een partij die adverteerders en publishers aan elkaar koppelt. Kok omschrijft het als een marktplaats voor mensen die met affiliate marketing aan de slag willen.
“Een affiliate netwerk heb je zo gegoogled. Maar de keuze is lastig, omdat er zoveel netwerken zijn. Veel beginnende publishers melden zich bij een stuk of tien verschillende netwerken aan. Dat is een typische beginnersfout. Als je een of twee netwerken uitprobeert, leer je daarvan en kun je uitbreiden.” - Bepaal wat voor soort producten je wilt promoten. Wil je producten promoten van een grote aanbieder? Check dan of die zelf een affiliate programma aanbiedt. Grote aanbieders zijn vaak niet aangesloten bij een affiliate netwerk.
- Bereid je voor op de aanmelding bij een affiliate netwerk.
“Om je aan te melden heb je een domeinnaam nodig”, vertelt Kok. Je domeinnaam is de naam van je website. Voordat je je bij een affiliate netwerk aansluit, wordt je domeinnaam gescreend op dereclameregels." - Schrijf je bij een of twee affiliate netwerken in. Kok adviseert om daar niet te lang mee te wachten.
“Als je vijf of zes artikelen op je website hebt staan, is het duidelijk voor het netwerk wat jouw expertise is en kun je al beginnen. Meld je je pas aan als je al 100 artikelen hebt geschreven, dan moet je de affiliate links nog in al die artikelen plaatsen. Bovendien bereik je de mensen die die artikelen al hebben gelezen niet opnieuw.” - Verdiep je in de voorwaarden van affiliate netwerken. Tijdens je inschrijving kom je twee soorten voorwaarden tegen: standaardvoorwaarden en programmavoorwaarden. De standaardvoorwaarden zijn opgesteld door het affiliate netwerk, de programmavoorwaarden door de adverteerder.
“Programmavoorwaarden kunnen erg verschillen. In het ene programma staat bijvoorbeeld dat je op social media moet posten, in het andere niet. Lees de voorwaarden altijd goed door. Als je je niet houdt aan de programmavoorwaarden, kan een adverteerder weigeren je te betalen.” - Kies een adverteerder. Vaak krijg je als publisher een percentage van de verkoopprijs voor je promotie. Hoe duurder het product, hoe meer geld de promotie oplevert.
“Veel mensen promoten daarom liever een koelkast dan bijvoorbeeld een nieuw sapje", vertelt Kok, "maar vergeet niet dat bezoekers minder snel een koelkast kopen. Het percentage dat je per koelkast krijgt is hoger, maar het aantal koelkasten dat via jouw promotie verkocht wordt, is waarschijnlijk veel lager dan het aantal sapjes.” - Als je een blog schrijft waarin je een link naar een product verwerkt, zet de link dan zo hoog mogelijk in je tekst.
“Veel beginnende publishers schrijven een tekst van 2000 woorden en plaatsen de link onderaan. Vaak zien lezers de link dan niet.” - Check de reclameregels als je een product promoot. Promotie moet bijvoorbeeld herkenbaar zijn als promotie. Deel je een link tegen betaling? Laat zien dat dit reclame is. Plaats bijvoorbeeld (aff) achter de link. Of zorg dat de promotie opvalt tussen je andere berichten, bijvoorbeeld in een kader. Voor promotie via video, podcast en streaming geldenextra regels.

Wil je je product of dienst promoten via anderen en zoek je geschikte personen of bedrijven met een website, podcast, blog of socialmediakanaal? Volg onderstaande stappen om te zorgen dat de samenwerking tussen jou (de adverteerder) en je partner (de publisher) het gewenste resultaat oplevert:
- Bepaal wat je wilt bereiken, bijvoorbeeld een product verkopen of zoveel mogelijk aanvragen voor een brochure. Zorg dat de promotie van je partner aansluit bij dit doel.
- Vergelijk een aantal affiliate netwerken, voordat je een netwerk kiest.
“Je kunt vooraf een zogenaamd ‘request of information’ sturen”, zegt Kok. “Vraag dan bijvoorbeeld of het netwerk ervaring heeft met de producten die jij wilt promoten. Stuur dezelfde vraag naar meerdere netwerken, zodat je de antwoorden kunt vergelijken.” - Wil je je product promoten via een netwerk in het buitenland? Informeer je dan over de wet- en regelgeving voor reclame in dat land.
“Vooral in Amerika kun je snel aangeklaagd worden als je je niet aan de Amerikaanse reclameregels houdt.” - Verdiep je in de verschillende werkwijzen en afspraken. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten is het bijvoorbeeld heel gewoon dat er per mediabericht een apart contract wordt gemaakt.
- Kies een partner en check of deze als publisher is ingeschreven bij KVK. Controleer en evalueer je partner en de resulaten van jullie samenwerking, bijvoorbeeld aan de hand van cookies.
- Bereken of de promotie je voldoende oplevert. Zoek uit wat je overhoudt na aftrek van de kosten voor de publisher en het affiliate netwerk.
Of je slapend rijk wordt van affiliate marketing valt nog te bezien. Maar als je je goed verdiept in netwerken, voorwaarden en reclameregels is het een goede methode om extra geld te verdienen.
