Affiliate marketing en influencer marketing kennen een dunne scheidingslijn. Soms worden de termen door elkaar gebruikt, samengevoegd onder de noemer partnerships of kan er verwarring ontstaan. Wat is nu wat? En hoe gaan deze marketing kanalen hand in hand?

Laten we bij het begin beginnen: wat zijn de definities van deze twee online marketing opties?

Binnen de definitie van affiliate marketing wordt vooral het proces en de stakeholders uitgelicht, bij influencer marketing staat de rol van de betreffende influencer centraal.
Uitgever = beïnvloeder?
Als we dieper ingaan op het woord publisher binnen affiliate marketing dan kan dit volgens de definitie een influencer zijn. Het kan een persoon of groep (en groep in dit geval als website) betreffen die invloed uit kan oefenen op het gedrag van de doelgroep. In principe heeft iedere publisher dit als doel: zo kunnen zij juist meer commissie verdienen. Alleen: niet iedere publisher heeft veel volgers op social media waar ze veelvuldig gebruik van maken.
Waarom zien we publishers niet per definitie als influencers? Juist omdat zij zich focussen op hun website: een blog, contentwebsite, kortingscodeplatform, cashbackprogramma of vergelijkingswebsite. Social media is vaker een bijzaak. Een publisher is dus niet per definitie een influencer, maar kan dit wel zijn. Net als dat influencers ook publisher kunnen zijn.
Influencer marketing binnen affiliate marketing
Voor adverteerders binnen affiliate marketing wordt het steeds belangrijk om de complete funnel te bedienen en niet alleen te focussen op de publishers die zij al kennen. Nieuwe publishers worden gezocht voor het begin van de funnel om meer op de inspiratie in te kunnen spelen. Vooral micro influencers, de influencers die in een niche zitten, of kleine toekomstige influencers zijn hiervoor erg interessant en worden volop benaderd. Doordat zij zich in een niche bevinden of naar verwachting in de toekomst groter worden, kunnen adverteerders nu al profiteren van hun doelgroep.
Omdat deze influencers niet groot genoeg zijn om in aanmerking te komen voor een samenwerking met een influencer agency tonen zij interesse in affiliate marketing. Beter een commissie verdienen dan geen geld verdienen. Daarnaast vinden zij het vaak erg tof om samen te werken met grote adverteerders, al is het dan op affiliate marketing basis.
Affiliate marketing binnen influencer marketing
Dat adverteerders via affiliate marketing vaker de kleinere en potentiele influencers benaderen in plaats van de grote heeft te maken met de welwillendheid van de influencers. Deze influencers willen graag iets aan geld verdienen en vinden affiliate marketing een mooie oplossing. De grote(re) influencers zijn gewend om beloond te worden in een vast bedrag. Als je dit gewend bent, dan is het logisch dat affiliate marketing een stuk minder interessant is. Je vergelijkt dan een vast bedrag voor inspanningen met een (ten opzichte van een vast bedrag) relatief kleine commissie en een stukje risico.
Je ziet dan ook dat de meeste grote influencers niet op affiliate marketing basis samenwerken. Zonde vind ik. Ik denk namelijk dat en en ook een goede optie is! Affiliate links kunnen een basis zijn en de vaste bedragen daar bovenop. Zo behaal je meer samenwerkingen en de kans om de adverteerder via affiliate marketing later ook voor een vast bedrag aan je te binden als influencer.
Het komt dus vaker voor dat kleine of micro influencers affiliate marketing inzetten ten opzichte van de grote influencers. Voor beide valt iets te zeggen natuurlijk, maar ik blijf het zonde vinden als beide kansen laten liggen.
Wat is nu het grote verschil?
Het grote verschil zit hem in de grootte van de influencer. Om grote influencers in te zetten heb je influencer marketing nodig omdat zij (haast) geen affiliate marketing inzetten. Om kleine of micro influencers in te zetten kan dit vaak ook via affiliate marketing! Het verschil zit hem dus mede in de manier van betaling: fixed fee vs. commissie.
